Lee and his Ford truck pulled up at the Sinclair gas station in Brewster, Nebraska, where I was filling up Dory. He popped his head around the gas tanks and said, "That's a nice van you've got there.”

I hadn’t considered my van as a way to start conversations with potential portrait subjects, but I’ll take it! Lee and I talked for a bit about large gas tanks and gas mileage, and then he disappeared into the gas station. When he came back out with two bowls of strawberry soft serve ice cream, I knew I had to ask if I could take his picture for the project.

He smiled and just asked that I let him give his wife her ice cream. (She wasn't feeling well so she didn't want to be in the photo.) They live in a tiny town with a population of 12, so social distancing is pretty easy. He said they lived out east during his working years, but they moved to Nebraska 20 years ago. These days he works a retirement job as a day worker, which involves doing anything from moving cattle, corn, or hay to training horses.

After a few minutes of photos and chatting, he looked at me and said, "I'm done now.” Then he got back in his truck to get on with his day and eat his ice cream.
